Yesterday Afternoon at 1415 hours Taskforce Alpha was dispatched to Waterford Township for 5” Supply Line to provide a water supply for a deep seated mulch fire. Engine 842 originally responded with a crew 3 and was met by one of our support vehicles which brought extra manpower. The engine crew laid approximately 900 feet of 5” supply hose to relay water from different engines what was being drafted from the Atco Lake.
Engine 842 pumped as a relay engine for 14 hours before a relief engine came in and took its place. In all 3 separate crews from Station 84 traveled to the scene to relieve the previous crew. Engine 842 cleared the fire ground at approximately 0445hours.
This morning Members of Station 84, Gloucester Twp. Engine 88, and Gloucester Township Fire District 6 met to train on the use of Para-Tech Struts and Vehicle Stabilization. Just after 4 this morning CamCo. Taskforce Bravo was dispatched to the Gloucester City High School for a Regional Cover Assignment. Rescue 84 responded with a crew of 4. While enroute County Communications rerouted Rescue 84 to Station 32 (Bellmawr FD) to standby as the Rescue Company for several areas. The cover was in place for a little over an hour before being released.
While the Rescue Crew was committed, Station 84 remained staffed with an additional 4 members to assure a quick response if needed in Gloucester Twp.
This morning just after 9am Taskforce Box 84 was alerted to an Outer Building Fire in the Blackwood Estates. Communications advised responding units that the caller said their shed was on fire. Engine 88 and 8402 (AC Imielinski) arrived to confirm a 10x25 shed well involved, and stretched an attack line. It is with regret that we announce the passing of Past Chief Walter Spain. Walt as known to everyone, served the residents of Blackwood for 55 years in the fire service. Walt was the Blackwood Fire Company Chief in 1980 and also served as Company President from 1986-1987. Walt was a retired school teacher and has had an impact on many lives. From his war stories and knowledge of history and current events, Walt would strike a conversation with anyone and offer a fresh cup of coffee. Walt Spain was the true definition of a life member and was bestowed the honor of having our newly renovated members lounge dedicated to him. Walt will be missed by all of us here at the Blackwood Fire Company as guys like him are not easily replaced. Details are being arranged and when they become available they will be posted the the Fire Company Facebook page.
The members of the Blackwood Fire Company regret to inform everyone that after much debate the membership has decided to cancel our 2020 Christmas Parade. With the current state of the pandemic and having to properly maintain social distancing practices we felt it was best to cancel the parade for this year. There is a lot of work behind the scenes that goes into the parade, especially the night of and with the amount of people it takes to properly make this parade a success, along with the amount of people that attend every year we felt the responsible thing for us to do is cancel it. We absolutely understand that our parade is a tradition for many families to attend together, as it is a tradition for our families to come together and help decorate and set up for the parade. We love and appreciate the support from the community so we are already looking forward to next year. We hope everyone understands and can support this hard decision that had to be made.
